Ever-Changing BPJS Kesehatan Premium Policy Stirs Controversy

Summary

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) decided to increase the healthcare premiums of Social Security Agency (BPJS) through Presidential Regulation (PP) No. 64/2020 on the second amendment of Presidential Regulation No. 82/2018 on health insurance.

The Coordinating Economic Minister, Airlangga Hartarto, said that the premium increases were to maintain the financial sustainability of BPJS Kesehatan. He hoped that the new premiums could smoothen BPJS Kesehatan’s operations and reduce its debt problems to various institutions such as hospitals and pharmacies.
