What Are the Risks of the Regional Elections Postponement?

Summary

The House of Representatives (DPR), the Home Affairs Ministry, and the General Election Commission (KPU) agreed to postpone the simultaneous regional elections (Pilkada) from September 23 to December 9, 2020. Initially, there were three options: December 2020 or March and September 2021. They finally decided to hold it in December 2020, assuming the Covid-19 pandemic would be over in May 2020.

The Commission II chairman, Ahmad Doli Kurnia, said that they factored in the government's seriousness in handling the Covid-19 in the decision to hold the elections on December 9. "We must show optimism," he said. Nevertheless, Doli also warned that the execution would rely heavily on the Covid-19 emergency response. If the pandemic is over by May 29, 2020, the General Election Commission will continue the preliminary stages of the elections, supposedly occurring in June. However, if such a scenario is not realistic, the House of Representatives, the central government and the KPU will change their decision again.
