Floods, Social Issues, and Anies Political Turbulence
The floods that hit Jakarta, Tangerang, and Bekasi towards the end of February 2020 became a significant pressure for the Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan. The latest flood almost triggered social conflict, with violence broke out at AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City, East Jakarta, as residents blamed the township for causing the flood. Several property projects in other regions could not escape from similar accusations.
Some factions in the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) used the turmoil to pressure Anies politically. It formed a special committee for the flood and immediately asked for Anies and his staff's information. DPRD's Commission D Deputy Chairman Nova Harivan Paloh said the Jakarta Regional House Chairman had signed a letter for the formation of the Special Committee. "[With the special committee] we will ask the governor for information about floods," he said. The National Democratic Party's politician claimed to have repeatedly reminded the Jakarta government about floods, but there has been no significant control effort.
