India Sets Sights on Indonesian Sugar Market
India is currently assessing the possibility of exporting its sugar to Indonesia, following the massive drop in sugar production in Thailand. The Hindu Business Line reported that India was competing against Brazil to supply 250,000-300,000 tons of raw sugar to Indonesia until May 2020.
The managing director of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd, Prakash Naiknavare, said that Thailand’s loss would provide India a golden opportunity to export sugar to Indonesia. He suggested domestic mills to stop producing white sugar and make raws for two months before the crushing season is over. India’s opportunity is getting bigger after Indonesia applied lower International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA) from 1,200 to 200. At the moment, most Indian sugar millers produce sugar with the ICUMSA level of 600 or lower.
