Omnibus Law and Halal Certification Business

Summary

The government allowed Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH) to cooperate with Islamic mass organizations in issuing halal certificates, as stated in the investment-attracting Omnibus bill on job creation.

In the Law No. 33/2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantee, BPJPH could only work with several ministries, halal inspection institutions, and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). Whereas in the Omnibus Law bill, the government hands over MUI authority in issuing halal certificates to BPJPH. Article 49 of the bill also allows BPJPH to collaborate with Islamic organizations having legal status in administering halal product guarantees, including publishing and revoking halal certificates.
