Sugar Imports to Soar as Production Slumps

Summary

Discourses surfaced in early 2020 that the government is mulling on importing sugar for consumption as the domestic stock and production plummeted. The current inventory of 1.7 million tons is only sufficient until May 2020.

The Agro-Industry Director-General at the Industry Ministry, Abdul Rochim, said that he had sent recommendations for the export of consumer sugar totaling 495,000 tons to the Trade Ministry and the Coordinating Economic Affairs Ministry. "We have issued the recommendation since last year for May 2020 consumption before the grinding period is over," he said. However, only 122,000 tons of import has been agreed upon until now.
