Harun Masiku Case: A Dent on State Institutions’ Credibility

Summary

The graft case involving the General Election Commission’s officer, Wahyu Setiawan, has entered a new phase. The disappearance of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Harun Masiku, as one of the suspects bribing Wahyu, revealed that the scandal might involve several state institutions from the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Directorate-General of Immigration, to Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Previously, KPK stated that Harun was not in Indonesia since Wahyu Setiawan’s arrest on January 8, 2020. Not long after that, the Law and Human Rights Minister, Yasonna Laoly, also backed KPK’s statement. However, the director-general of immigration, Ronny Sompie, admitted that Harun only made a one-day trip to Singapore and had returned to Indonesia on January 7, 2020. Yasonna then fired Ronny and accused him of making confusing information. However, up until this day, KPK has not found Harun yet, leading to the assumption that someone is hiding and preventing him from revealing a much bigger scandal.
